Actually, smiling is somewhat of a learned trait, and in Korea (though it may be changing due to westernization, I’ve only seen old people do this in shows - but I have seen it!) people smile when they’re angry o-o … 
Then there’s the fact that in many European countries (according to a certain Irish blogger) people really only smile when they’re actually, you know, happy. As opposed to America (or Japan, I think they actually smile more over there) where people smile all the time for no reason except to seem “amiable.” That’s considered weird to some people. So… smiles do change depending on culture… just saying…

(note: this is sort of a pun, so I didn’t translate it. He said “o-sashimi yasai” which means “raw fish and vegetables.” But he uses it as “goodnight,” because of the similar sound to “o-yasumi nasai” I wrote it in romaji because if you see the vowels, you can tell more easily how they’d sound pretty similar o-o …)

This is how I format my kanji on anki… incase anyone wants to see… in case anyone wants to study kanji *cough* >.> … in case certain people who claim to want to learn Japanese decide to study kanji *cough* … ＼(^o^)／ … It’s really easy, honestly…

Front Side:

(insect + plaid = mosquito)

I read the front, then fill in the blank with the meaning and draw the kanji from memory.

I always choose the option “hard” unless it’s a character that I KNOW I know. Like 気 or 私 or something like that.

I also make the back side really big so that I can see the kanji clearly.

Front Side:

The _____ owlkin wandering the fields would often swallow chihuahuas in one bite.

Back Side:

monstrous

(owlkin + rice field + one + mouth + chihuahua = monstrous)

Also, I make up my own primitive meanings (as in the smaller parts making up the characters) most of the time. For example, Heisig gave the three strokes on the top left of 獣 the meaning of owl (I think), but owls bore me. So I chose owlkin. It’s a WoW reference, and easier to remember for me. The bottom left is “one” plus “mouth.” So here, I just interpret it as “to swallow in one bite.”

Also, I’m lenient with my English keywords. 獣 actually means “beast.” I found it easier, however, to use it as the descriptive word “monstrous” in order to make a sentence for it. The point is it still has that relative meaning, so I can remember it.

So, a few more examples…

So this next one is actually an example of one that worked out pretty well for me, with an easy to remember story… So the left side of this character was assigned the meaning of “dog tags” by Heisig, but I gave it my own meaning of “sweep mission,” a reference to City Hunter (I think I’d just finished watching that show when I got to these characters xD) … The right side means water, and the character as a whole means “bay.” Well, in the show, the sweep mission happened in Nampo Bay. So my primitive meaning, and the character’s meaning went quite well together ^^

Front:

The sweep mission took place in the waters of Nampo _____.

Back:

Bay

(waters + sweep mission = Bay)

It’s a lot easier to remember them when you make these kinds of fun connections. Like this memey one…
